Maximalist Bohemian Rooms I'd Copy Right Now: Funky + Fabulous spaces

When you think of “bohemian design” a large umbrella opens up that covers a big range of tastes. Is it someone’s gypsy caravan inspired magenta living room, with draped jewel-toned textiles and cushy floor pouf ottomans? Yes, yes it is. Is it also an urban artist’s brick wall apartment with stacks and stacks of books and makeshift furniture hanging underneath an elaborately expensive chandelier? Yes, yes it is.

The word applies more to the person creating the space than the design style itself. A “bohemian” person was traditionally and historically considered to be an artist or free-spirit of sorts; or someone at the very least whose lifestyle defied the conventional norms. A traveler, a performer, a writer. The walls of their homes becoming reflections of their lifestyles: a carefree hodgepodge of curiosities collected over a period of adventures and projects.

So what kind of bohemian are you?

If you’re looking to infuse a specific style or feel into your home space I suggest playing to your interests and surrounding yourself in colors and feels that will bring you joy and make you feel the most like yourself.

Because boho design style covers such a wide range - we’ll break it down in a few posts (because there are honestly just too many rooms I love to include them all in one, and as the style goes, I pretty much love all of it.)

Today we’ll focus on dreamy bohemian spaces that are funky, fabulous, colorful, and artsy.

Think a maximalist ‘feast for the eyes’, and ‘more is more.’

More books, more art, more knick-knacks. More textiles, more patterns, and more graphics.

Bolder colored walls + accents. Plants, plants, plants.

I love the irreverent maximalism of all of these rooms. The patterns on patterns. The rugs on rugs on rugs. While I do really love so many of the minimalist and more neutral boho spaces, I’m a sucker for punchy colors — so these spaces speak to the wanderer and free-spirit in my soul. (The magpie and the hoarder, too.)

Bohemian doesn’t have to be fancy, either.

I’m loving this couch-substitute floor space that’s been created using nothing but an array of comfy looking throw pillows and floor cushions.

Surrounded by plants, stacks of books, and an abundance of natural sunlight?

Yep - just leave me here for the day and I’d be pretty content.

Some of these rooms are definitely toeing the line of bohemian and maximalist. I’m a big sucker for fabulously over-the-top maximalism, as you know if you’ve been on the blog!

So many colors!
So many patterns!

I’m here for it; maximalist bohemian fabulousness, all mish-mashed together. It appeals to the artist and collector in me.

These spaces make me want to go buy some cans of paint in a punchy color and to be more bold in my decorating!

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again —

After all, you only live once!
